Careers
Nurses
Hospice nursing requires the ability to address the physical, emotional and spiritual dimensions of a patient with terminal illness, through holistic care guided by the needs and desires of the patient and family. We strive to understand and honor each patient’s unique experience near life’s end. A hospice nurse blends the challenge of being technically proficient at managing pain and symptoms, with the compassion needed to support patients and families during life’s final journey. Some say hospice care is a calling. At Hospice of the Good Shepherd, we understand the passion to provide excellent care, to build relationships, and to have a fulfilling sense of purpose. We support our nurses as they help enhance the lives of their patients and families.
Nursing Assistants
Being a hospice nursing assistant is not just about giving excellent personal care. While we want our STNAs to be top notch in service to our patients, we also need staff that is confident, compassionate, and willing to work as a team. Hospice care is demanding work, physically and emotionally. We build relationships with patients and families quickly, often in the midst of crisis. STNAs are on the front line, and a valued part of the team. As the team member most frequently with the patient, he/she gets to know intimate details about each one. Communicating significant observations and actively participating in the plan of care helps the team provide the care that will help the patient live as fully as possible. Your passion for caring can be fulfilled at Hospice of the Good Shepherd.
Social Workers
The hospice social worker is a member of the interdisciplinary team whose primary role is meeting the psychosocial needs patients and families to help them deal with the impact of illness and anticipated death. Talking about death and dying is never easy, even for the most experienced among us. We often come into situations where the needs are often overwhelming, and the resources are limited. Flexibility and understanding of each unique situation, coupled with patience and compassion, are the qualities we seek in our team members. We respect the social worker’s expertise in their discipline, and seek to provide a work environment that is life-enhancing for staff and patients.
Chaplains
As a faith based organization, Hospice of the Good Shepherd puts special emphasis on meeting the spiritual and bereavement needs of patients, families, caregivers, and staff. Pastoral care at the end of life is about meeting people where they are spiritually, while showing respect and sensitivity to a variety of values, beliefs, cultures, and religious orientations. Our chaplains provide for spiritual and emotional needs through counseling, presence, support, scripture reading, prayer, and listening. They also work with community clergy to coordinate pastoral care services. Our chaplains are seminary or theological school graduates, and have been ordained/commissioned for the ministry of pastoral care. At Hospice of the Good Shepherd our chaplains have not only a gift for ministry but a passion for caring for others at the end of life.
