By dialing 711, a new statewide telephone relay number connects standard (voice) telephone users with deaf, hard of hearing, and/or speech-disabled people who use text telephones (TTY's). This is a free service. A person who is deaf, hard of hearing, deaf-blind or speech disabled uses a TTY to type his/her conversation to a communication assistant, who then reads the typed conversation to the standard telephone user. The communication assistant relays the hearing person's spoken words by typing them back to the TTY user.
